David Costa is a highly accomplished oboist and music educator based in Lisbon, Portugal. With over two decades of experience in both performance and teaching, he has established himself as a prominent figure in the Portuguese classical music scene.
David began his musical journey at the age of five and went on to study at the Lisbon Superior School of Music, where he earned his Bachelor's degree in Oboe, followed by a Master's degree in Music Education. His studies were further enriched by masterclasses with internationally renowned oboists, including Hänsjorg Schellenberger, Ernest Rombout, Washington Barella, Omar Zoboli, and Christian Wetzel.
As a performer, David has collaborated with major Portuguese orchestras, including the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Orquestra Filarmonia das Beiras, and the Metropolitana Orchestra, performing under the direction of world-class conductors such as Gustavo Dudamel, Paavo Järvi, Günther Herbig, and Pedro Carneiro. He has been a regular guest of the Portuguese Chamber Orchestra (OCP) since 2008 and has performed in prestigious events like the 2010 City of London Festival, which earned a four-star review in The Times.
Regular guest, as principal oboe, at Orquestra Sinfonietta de Lisboa since 2004, including the soundtrack for the film Um Amor de Perdição by Mário Barroso, featuring music by Bernardo Sassetti, where he was the soloist. In addition to his performance career, David is a passionate educator. He teaches oboe at the Orquestra - AE Vialonga and the Escola Profissional Metropolitana, and is regularly invited to give masterclasses across Portugal. His teaching philosophy is rooted in fostering creativity and technical excellence, inspiring the next generation of musicians.
David is also a dedicated chamber musician, having co-founded several ensembles, including a duo with pianist Pedro Ferro. The duo has been a strong advocate for Portuguese music, releasing two albums dedicated entirely to Portuguese composers in 2021 and 2024.David Costa is a Buffet Crampon artist and plays the "Légende" oboe.
